What is the purpose of the Chevy Z71 package in a 2wd truck?

chevy
mcmatrix12000 asked:

I am looking at a used 04′ Chevy Colorado. It says that it has the Z71 off road package but it is a 2wd truck. I know the Z71 package is an off road package, so why would it be offered in a 2wd truck?

1957 Chevy Bel Air - An American Classic

chevy
William Kelly asked:

There are just a handful of classic cars that just about anyone will immediately recognize and the 1957 Chevy Bel Air is one of them. From the classic tail fins to the hooded headlights this model is as much an American icon as parades and apple pie. While the term ‘57 Chevy has come to be used as a catchall phrase for that model year, as though there were just one model, there were actually several different variations of note. It’s interesting to consider that the boys at Chevy wanted to see a totally new design for the 1957 model year. Production problems and setbacks caused them to use the 1955 model design as a base one more time. Imagine how close we were to never seeing this model!

The 1957 Chevrolet came in three different main trim packages. The Bel Air was the top of the line luxury package featuring gold anodized trim pieces on the front grill, fenders, hood and trunk lid. The 210 package was a mid-line offering with the 150 package rounding out the line as a base offering. There were several body styles available for the 1957 model year, most of which had an option of the Bel Air trim package. The standard Chevy two and four door sedans were offered as well as a two door and four door Hardtop. Often confused by novice observers are the Sedans and Hardtop or Sport Coupes. The sedan model is easy to spot when you understand that model has upright pillars between the windows while the Hardtop or Sport Coupe does not. Also produced was what they called a Utility Coupe which featured a bench in the back rather than a regular seat for salesmen who needed to carry samples and deliver items. Station wagons were also popular at the time and Chevy offered two variations in ‘57. The Nomad was the high end version with a Bel Air trim package while the Handyman was offered in the 150 and 210 packages. And we can’t forget the famous Chevy Convertible from this year!

On top of the many body style variations from this year a ton of different options were available. Air Conditioning and Fuel Injection are perhaps the most notable two of them all however very few were sold. Air conditioning was still considered an unnecessary luxury by most and Fuel Injection was so new that most garages simply did not know how to fix the system. Most 1957 Chevy buyers that year opted for the tried and true carburetor. Other items offered included a “Surround Sound” system for the radio (which consisted of a speaker in the rear of the car), power radio antenna, power brakes and a padded dashboard. This was the same year the ill fated Turboglide transmission was introduced. Unfortunately this tranny had a bad reputation from the start and the vast majority of buyers avoided it. The Turboglide ceased production less than 4 years later.

While we think of this car as perhaps the most famous in American history the buying public at the time was not equally impressed. While sales are decent they fell short of expectations. In fact the Ford Motor Company out sold Chevy that year for the first time in over 20 years. Following an interesting trend in classic car market however, the 1957 Chevy remains one of the most sought after models for car collectors the world over.

Chevy Chevelle History

chevy
Eddie asked:

The Chevrolet Chevelle is a mid-sized car from Chevy, first rolling off the assembly line in 1964. It was manufactured from 1964 through 1977 and was one of General Motors most triumphant cars. Chevelle models ranged from easy on the pocket family cars to convertibles and powerful coupes. The Malibu was at first the top trim level of the Chevelle line, and it replaced the Chevelle name entirely after 1977. The Chevelle chassis, based on the reengineered GM A platform, provided the platform for the Chevrolet Monte Carlo, a very successful model itself.

The Chevelle was anticipated to compete with the equally sized Ford Fairlane, and to return to the Chevrolet lineup a model comparable in size and concept to the popular 1955-57 models. Early drawing photos show what would eventually be the Chevelle wearing Nova nameplates, the name that was used for the top trim level in the smaller Chevy II series. From 1964-69, the Chevelle was the groundwork for the similar Beaumont, a re-trimmed model sold only in Canada by Pontiac dealers.

A two-door station wagon was available in 1964 and 1965 in the bottom-line Chevelle 300 series. Four-door hardtops, dubbed Sport Sedans, were available from 1966 through 1972. Two-door hardtops and convertibles were produced from 1964 to 1972, while four-door sedans and four-door wagons were offered throughout the entire run. In line with other Chevrolet series, the two-door hardtops were called Sport Coupes. An assortment of models of wagons was sold with exclusive nameplates: Nomad (1968-1972), Nomad Custom (1968), Greenbrier (1969-1972), Concours (1967-1972), and Concours Estate (1968-1972).

The El Camino, a utility pickup, was part of the Chevy lineup and, depending on the year, was available in the 300/300 Deluxe trim level, Malibu trim level and the one-year only SS396. The El Camino outlived its passenger car counterpart until its end in 1987.

The Chevelle underwent a redesign for the 1973 model year. The so-called “colonnade hardtop” styling featured frameless door glass and fixed “B” pillars. Rear windows on coupes no longer could be opened, no doubt encouragement from GM to purchase the increasingly popular optional air conditioning. The Front suspension was based on the Camaro and Firebird which greatly improved handling. Engine choices ranged from the 250 I6 to the venerable 454 V8. Hardened engine valve seats and hydraulic camshafts made these engines reliable for many miles, and allowed them to accept the increasingly popular unleaded regular gasoline. Cross flow radiators and coolant reservoirs that prevented air from entering the system prevented overheating. Swivel bucket seats and center console for automatic and manual shift cars were offered in every model as was the instrument gauge cluster. Power front disc and rear drum brakes were standard. Power accessories, air conditioning and AM/FM tape stereo were more prevalent these years and provided a pleasing drive. A power moon roof was an option in 1973 and 1975.

The station wagon, available in 6 or 9 passenger seating, featured a rear hatchback door which allowed for easier entry and loading. The Chevrolet El Camino and GMC Sprint were based on the Chevelle. Yearly design changes to the front and rear mark the aesthetic differences as in preceding years. The 1973 to 1977 Chevelles were top sellers for GM as was the Oldsmobile Cutlass, which used the same A-body platform.

The 1973 model offerings started with the top luxury Laguna series with its distinct urethane nose, followed by Malibu and then deluxe models. A Super Sport SS package was available for Malibu coupes and for the only time, station wagons. The Super Sport SS option included a black front grille, SS emblem on the interior and exterior, body side striping, rally wheels with white letter tires, F41 sport suspension with front and rear sway bars, and a 350 or 454 V8. A 4 speed Muncie transmission was available with 350 or 454 equipped cars on any model.

In 1974 the Laguna S3 coupe replaced the “Super Sport SS” as the sporty performance option on the Chevelle. The nomenclature S3 referred to sport and 3rd generation Chevelle. It sported a special urethane nose, body side striping, Laguna S3 emblem, rally wheels, 4 spoke steering wheel and F41 sport suspension with front and rear sway bars. Radial tires on 15″ wheels and radial tuned suspension provided road grip and retractable 3 point seat belts were introduced and still used in new cars today. A 400 engine was new this year. The 454 was the top engine and available with the Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 or Muncie 4 speed transmissions.

With the Laguna nameplate now bearing the sporty model in the Chevelle line, the top-line series for 1974 became the Malibu Classic, offered in sedan, coupe and station wagon models. Unlike the ‘73 Laguna, the Malibu Classic used the same grille work as lesser Chevelle models but added a spring-loaded hood ornament. Inside, Malibu Classic featured luxurious interiors with notchback bench seats (or optional Strato bucket seats) upholstered in cloth or vinyl, carpeted door panels and wood grain instrument panel trim, and vertical opera windows on coupes or exterior wood trim on station wagons. Also for 1974, the base Chevelle Deluxe series was dropped, leaving the plain Malibu as the low-end series.

The 1975 Laguna S-3 debuted as a 1/2 year model in February and sported a new sloped front nose designed for NASCAR. H.E.I. or High Energy Ignition provided spark to the spark plugs with minimal maintenance and increased power. The larger distributor cap also provided better high RPM performance by decreasing the likelihood of the spark conducting to the wrong terminal. The 454 and Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 transmissions was available for the first half of the model year and then the 400 was the top engine choice. In 1976, the Chevelle was available with the new 5.0 liter 305 V8 the 350 and the 400. 1977 offered the Malibu Classic as the top model and the 350 was the top engine. A Chevelle S.E. or special edition was available and provided front and rear spoilers, rally wheels, special graphics and sport suspension. Only 50 or so were built. When GM downsized its intermediate models for 1978, the Chevelle name was dropped and all models took the Chevrolet Malibu name.

The 1973 to 1977 Chevelle was the top car in the NASCAR circuit in the 1970s. The car was so popular and successful on the track that Chevrolet developed a new front nose in 1975 that lead to the aerodynamic cars of today. The car dominated the field so much that NASCAR imposed a carburetor restrictor plate for all Laguna’s. Drivers that raced 1973 to 1977 Chevelles include Darrell Waltrip, Junior Johnson, Benny Parsons, Cale Yarborough, Bobby and Donnie Allison, Bobby Isaac, Lennie Pond, A.J. Foyt, Ricky Rudd, Dale Earnhardt and female racer Janet Guthrie.

Oresnik’s Chevy Truck Passes Million-mile Mark

chevy
Anthony Fontanelle asked:

Frank Oresnik’s Chevy truck dubbed ‘old girl’ recently passed the one million-mile mark thanks to an engine built in Flint.

“This engine is a real marvel,” Oresnik said in a telephone interview with The Flint Journal. “It keeps this truck going and going. I’m a complete booster of the job your men and women did on my engine.”

Officials at General Motors Corp. said the engine in Oresnik’s Chevy Silverado was manufactured at the former Flint V-8 Engine Plant off Van Slyke Road, which ceased production in 1999 and was demolished a year thereafter.

The durability of the engine is not surprising to V-8 workers. Actually, some of them are still building said engines at Flint Engine South, a plant situated on the same General Motors property. “They were good engines,” UAW Local 659 shop chairman Joe Ledford said of the V-8 that powered Oresnik’s truck. “That’s all we’ve ever done is build engines.”

Oresnik has been in the news for quite a while now. He hit the one million-mile milestone in southeastern Wisconsin with a National Public Radio audience listening in and a camera crew filming. “I can’t tell you how much fun it was,” Oresnik noted. “It was really humbling, all this interest.”

Oresnik passed the million-mile mark Feb. 8 in southeastern Wisconsin while on his way back home to Catawba, located in Price County, about an hour west of Rhinelander, reported MLive. “I won’t say it was relief … it was exhilarating,” he said later during a stop in Gresham. “This truck has been so dependable over the years.”

Oresnik said there has been some interested in General Motors or Shell Oil buying the truck. But he said he has interest in taking a roadtrip to Michigan and meeting workers who built the engine in Flint as well as those who assembled his truck in Pontiac.

John Crabtree, Flint Engine South’s plant manager, said in an e-mail that Oresnik would not be disappointed if he visited some of the “greatest engine building talent in the world today.”

“I was extremely proud to be the plant manager of the V-8 plant,” Crabtree concluded. “Whether we’re talking about the eight cylinders that we built then, the world-class six cylinders that the same workforce makes today, or any engine that GM needs for tomorrow. …This is just another reminder that our Flint South team is always up to the challenge.”

Chevy Trailblazer a Fs C Receiver Drier: for Better Air Conditioning

chevy
Anthony Fontanelle asked:

The Chevrolet sports utility vehicle series has been a stunning success for General Motors Corporation. Smaller than the Chevrolet Tahoe but larger than the Blazer, the Chevy Trailblazer portrays the patented technological standard of the company. More than ever, it puts the Chevrolet banner on top of the list of the most dynamic vehicles ready for action. The Trailblazer provides the most refined luxury features and offers superior handling control. These make the model perfect for off-road and on-the-highway driving activities. Looking at the components like the Chevy Trailblazer A FS C receiver drier alone justifies the polished concentration applied in building up this vehicle.

Used in the car’s air conditioning system, the Chevy Trailblazer A FS C receiver drier, is employed to allow the thermal expansion valve to have a liquid refrigerant. This ensures the proper operation of the valve which cannot run efficiently without the aid of this component. Placed close to the condenser, it can be easily noticed because of its shape, which is similar to that of a fire extinguisher. Both the expansion valve and the condenser are connected to the Chevy Trailblazer A FS C receiver drier. The indispensable functions of this Chevy component are to separate the liquid and the gas as well as to take away the moisture and to eliminate the unwanted external particles. At its top portion, it usually includes a sight glass, which is used to boost the system. When a vehicle has a receiver drier, there is no need to have an accumulator.

Checking the condition of the receiver drier improves the function of the Chevy Trailblazer. When the part is efficiently working, the driver must ensure that the sight glass does not have any noticeable vapor bubble. Whenever bubbles appear, they indicate that the system has inadequate refrigerant. This requires a check up by a professional mechanic. Eventually, this happens as the ideal function of the car component lasts for only two years. Therefore, having a major repair or replacing the Chevy Trailblazer A FS C receiver drier is normal.
