New Chevrolet Products for General Motors India

chevrolet
Zeke Gervis asked:

General Motors, one of the world’s largest automaker and producer of OEM parts like Chevrolet oxygen sensor is not only experiencing high sales in China but also in India. It can be remembered that for a while GM India’s portfolio has been having large gap and what they feel that they need to have it filled. And they thought that small cars may help bring in some volumes. And now after a four months wait they still have not received any of the small cars they desire but they were given two smart superminis namely the Aveo U-VA and the Spark. Luckily, this is not the end for GM India but just the beginning.

The Chevrolet Optra sedan that is petrol powered will get GM-Daewoo Automotive Technologies’ (GM-DAT) newly developed 2,000cc TCDI diesel engine. Running on 1600 bar pressure, the four-cylinder common rail diesel will produce 120 bhp of peak power and an astounding 28.6 kgm of potent torque turning the wheels at 2,000 rpm which is much better than the current top of the range, the Skoda Laura.

And also for the first time since the Opel Astra 1.7 turbodiesel, GM India will offer an oil burner in sedan. The Optra has been declining in sales for over the past two years now and was given additional enhancement such as new headlamp, some grille treatment, and a new tail-lamp cluster. The interiors were likewise revised in the hope to make it more appealing to customers.

The new facelift will also enable the Optra to share a lot of parts with the SR-V hatchback but most importantly it will enable GM to finally create a strong contender to the Skoda Octavia that has been dominating the diesel sedan segment for more years than we can remember. The Optra diesel will be launched as early as the first week of June and will have a price tag ranging from Rs 9 to 10 lakh.

And that’s not all! Dueto the success of the SUVs in the Rs 15 to 20 lakh segment in India, Chevrolet will also fly in some of its newest mud-plugger that has been gaining street popularity in Europe. Powered by petrol as well as diesel engines, the good-looking Captiva if it makes it in India will be the only SUV in its segment to offer two different fueled powertrains.

The Captiva has a seating capacity of five to seven people. Its 2,400cc petrol and 2,000cc diesel engines have enough power to keep up with its competitors in this segment. The Captiva produces 141 bhp for petrol and 150 bhp for diesel. It can sprint from 0 to 100 kph in less than 12 seconds and can reach a top speed of 200 kph.

It will also feature the following—ABS, ESP, leather seats, a high-end audio system, 16-inch tires—overall it can be concluded that the Captiva is exactly what customers would want for their SUVs. Another advantage that the Captiva will have over its competitors is in terms of price since it is only around Rs 18 lakh, which is lower, compared to Honda’s CR-V with price at Rs 20 lakh. And with products with tag price that range from Rs 3 lakh to Rs 20 lakh it is expected that 2007 might prove to be a good year for General Motors India.

Gm Pushes Chevrolet Sequel Into History Books

chevrolet
Anthony Fontanelle asked:

The General Motors Corporation made history by announcing that it has made no commitments to build the Chevy Sequel - the world’s most technologically advanced automobile. The Sequel is the first electrically-driven fuel cell vehicle to yield 300 miles on one tank of hydrogen, in and out of traffic on public roads, while producing zero emissions.

“With this drive, General Motors has reached another important milestone toward the commercialization of our fuel cell vehicles, by achieving the range expected by today’s consumers,” said Larry Burns, the GM vice president for research & development and strategic planning.

Burns added, “And we did it while producing zero emissions, as a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle only emits water. In addition, the hydrogen produced at Niagara Falls, used to fuel Sequel, was derived from hydropower - a clean, renewable resource. This means that the entire process - from the creation of the hydrogen to the use of the fuel in the vehicle - was virtually carbon dioxide (CO2) free.”

The Chevrolet Sequel debuted at the 2005 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. Its first drivable version was introduced last fall. The hybrid crossover SUV concept is the first vehicle in the world to successfully integrate a hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system with a broad menu of advanced technologies like the steer-and brake-by-wire controls, wheel hub motors, lithium-ion batteries and a lightweight aluminum structure. It uses clean, renewable hydrogen as a fuel and emits only water vapor. It also is the first fuel cell vehicle to achieve real-world range.

The Sequel is powered by a fuel cell powertrain, which covers an electronic control unit and a fourth-generation version of the automaker’s fuel-cell stack. The fuel-cell technology of America’s largest automaker is an electrochemical device that blends hydrogen fuel with oxygen from air to produce electricity. The technology emits nothing more than water vapor hence it is treated as the most environment friendly vehicle around the globe. The Sequel may not be featuring Chevrolet pickup side window covers but its offers are even more fascinating.

Electric motors have different characteristics from internal-combustion engines. Purposely, they achieve maximum torque at start-up. According to GM’s figures, the Sequel will accelerate from 0-to-96 km/h in less than ten seconds and that is quicker than a Hummer H3 and well within the CUV/SUV norm.

Hydrogen storage and the driving range are the main concentration in the development of GM’s fuel-cell vehicles. The Sequel stores eight kilograms of gaseous hydrogen in three cylindrical, carbon-composite fuel tanks which are pressurized to 700 bars and mounted longitudinally below the cabin floor.

“General Motors is proving that advanced technology can remove the automobile from the environmental debate and reduce our dependence on petroleum,” Burns said. “Chevy Sequel clearly shows that our vision for the future of the automobile is real and sustainable.”

The 300-mile drive through the state of New York started at General Motors’ Fuel Cell Activity Center in Honeoye Falls, where the automaker officially sent the Chevy Sequel off into the history books. “It is our fuel cell teams’ tremendous record of success and absolute dedication to this tremendously important cause,” Burns noted, “which will ultimately enable our country, and our world, to diversify our energy sources and displace large amounts of petroleum.”

In Tarrytown, the Sequel achieved the 300-mile mark and crossed the finish line. There, GM reiterated its commitment to bringing part of its next fleet of over 100 Chevrolet Equinox fuel cell vehicles under the “Project Driveway” demonstration program to the greater NY metropolitan area this fall.

Ambidextrous Chevrolets: Unusually Skillful

chevrolet
KatieJones asked:

General Motor Corporation’s Chevrolet brand intends to develop world cars in the near future. In view thereof, the automaker will be entertaining ambidextrous Chevrolets to serve different auto standards in different states.

The automaker believes that flexibility is the key to yield universal success hence some Chevrolets will be manufactured in a right-hand drive (RHD). Now the prerogative of choosing RHD models is vested to those who prefer the said type of vehicle.

GM has restructured its product lines for Chevrolet to blend with the different global technical centers that use varied platforms. The product lines will be developed with the standards of various vehicles around the world in mind. This means that future Chevrolet models will be manufactured with less reliance on the GM-Daewoo technical centre which is based in Korea. Instead, building Chevrolets will take into consideration different auto standards in various states to cope with the global demands.

Unfortunately, the decision of GM came too late for the retro-styled HHR mini-MPV. The Chevrolet HHR (which stands for Heritage High Roof) is a retro-look compact crossover sport utility vehicle. It is designed to slot below the Equinox. The said CUV shares platform with the Chevrolet Cobalt, Pontiac G5 and the Saturn ION.

The Chevrolet HHR was penned by Brian Nesbitt, who was a former designer at Chrysler where he was the lead designer of the PT Cruiser. Nesbitt was recruited by the automaker to join its design staff. Now he is serving as the chief designer of the Chevrolet brand. The HHR is assembled in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico and is available for sale throughout the North American auto market. It is also available in Japan.

The Chevrolet HHR’s design was inspired by the 1949 Chevrolet Suburban. The vehicle features huge, square fender flares, a hemispherical grille and a Chevy window motor. The automaker’s target sale is 60,000 units annually.

The Chevrolet HHR in LT trim is equipped with a standard MP3-capable radio and power driver’s seat. It has a big cargo-carrying capacity for a car of its dimension, with a flat-load floor and fold-flat front passenger seat. The vehicle was launched at the Geneva Motor Show. It is manufactured in left-hand drive.

GM also confirmed that the new Cehvrolet Camaro muscle car will be built as a right-hooker, which makes sales in the United Kingdom as an image-leader for the brand a distinct possibility. The products of the new Chevrolet structure will serve as replacements for the Kalos and Lacetti models. These models will be developed in Korea.

Experts are saying that the globalization of GM’s product development will take five or six years to work through. Moreover, Chevrolet’s positivism will help iron out the different perceptions of the brand in different markets.

Davey G. Johnson, the associate editor at AIM, L.A., has this to say: “While the altruistic sorts over at Autoblog seem pleased as punch that General Motors plans to make every upcoming Chevy left-or-right-hand-drive capable because it would allow folks in foreign lands who drive on the wrong side of the car to experience the joys of mullet growth and Camaro ownership, we’re more excited for a purely selfish reason. If the introduction of the Pontiac G8 wasn’t enough of a harbinger, this edict is obviously one more yellow brick in the road to America for the Holden Ute.”

Which shoe on a Chevrolet S10 is the rear and which is the front?

chevrolet
boredpenguin2 asked:

I have a 1998 Chevrolet S10 rear wheel drive with drum brakes on the rear and disc in front. My truck recently failed inspection because I put the rear shoe in the front and the front shoe in the rear the mechanic said. I have taken off my shoes and I can’t tell the difference. And I didn’t take a picture before removing them. How can you tell which shoe belongs where since they will go on backwards (I assumed they would only go on one way)?
